After Herod gave the command to slay the children in Bethlehem, the just elder Joseph was warned in a dream to depart into Egypt (Mt. 2:13-16). In fulfillment of the prophecy, the idols throughout Egypt fell down and shattered into pieces as they traveled from one city to the next. God chose Joseph, a righteous man from the tribe of Judah who was a carpenter, to minister unto His Great Mystery of Dispensation by protecting the Virgin, providing for her, and acting as her husband so that she, being a virgin, might not suffer reproach when she was found with a child. The Holy Family journeyed from Palestine to Dair Al-Muharraq, entering into several villages and countries in between. During their journey, they sailed on the Nile River. In this icon, St. Joseph is portrayed as a protector of the Mother and Child, in adherence to God’s command to flee to Egypt. |
